Telegram auto reply: answering messages while you are away
What an auto reply is, how a fixed away message differs from an AI reply that reads the question first, when each one is the right tool, and the cases where automating your replies makes things worse rather than better.
What a Telegram auto reply is
A Telegram auto reply is a message sent automatically to someone who contacts you, without you being at your phone. There are two kinds: a fixed reply that sends the same text every time, and an AI reply that reads the incoming message and responds to what was actually asked.
Which one you want depends entirely on what people message you about. If the answer is always “I’m away, back Monday”, fixed text is perfect and you do not need anything clever. If people arrive with real questions — your prices, your hours, whether something is in stock, where their order is — fixed text answers none of them, and the message still sits there until you get back.
What Telegram offers on its own
Telegram’s Business features include greeting messages for new contacts and away messages for hours you set. Both send predefined text. They are genuinely useful and, if a fixed message is all you need, they are the simplest answer.
The gap they leave is the one above: they do not read the incoming message. That is the difference an AI auto-reply closes, and it is worth being precise about, because “Telegram can’t auto-reply” is simply not true.
| Fixed away message | AI auto-reply | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads the incoming message | No | Yes |
| Answer changes per question | No | Yes |
| Best for | “I’m away until Monday” | Repeated real questions |
| Setup effort | Minutes | Minutes, then tuning |
| Risk if it goes wrong | Low — wrong timing at worst | Higher — it can answer something badly |
| Where you get it | Telegram Business features | An AI client such as Odingram |
When an auto reply earns its place
Auto-replies pay off wherever the same questions arrive repeatedly, outside the hours you are available, from people who will go elsewhere if nobody answers.
- Small businesses taking enquiries on Telegram. Opening hours, prices, availability and “do you deliver to X” make up most first messages.
- Group and channel admins. New members ask the same four things. An auto-reply handles them so you are not the FAQ.
- Freelancers and consultants. Acknowledging an enquiry within a minute, with something specific to what was asked, holds the conversation until you can reply properly.
- Anyone in a different timezone from the people messaging them. The overnight gap is exactly where enquiries go cold.
When you should not automate a reply
An auto-reply is the wrong tool whenever the cost of a poor answer is higher than the cost of a slow one. That is a real category, and it is worth naming.
- Anything sensitive. Health, money, legal matters, complaints, bad news. People can tell, and being handed to a machine at that moment lands badly.
- Close personal chats. The people who know how you write will notice immediately.
- Negotiations and commitments. Never let an automated reply quote a price, promise a date or agree to terms on your behalf.
- Conversations already going wrong. If someone is frustrated, an automated answer usually makes it worse.
The practical rule: automate the first reply to a cold enquiry, not the conversation that follows it.
Setting one up in Odingram
In Odingram, auto-replies are part of the AI layer that sits on top of your normal Telegram account, so they work in the chats people already message you in — no separate bot account and no separate username.
- Install Odingram from Google Play and sign in with your existing Telegram account.
- Open the app’s automation settings and create an auto-reply rule.
- Describe what the reply should cover and where it applies. Be specific about the things you do not want it to answer — that matters as much as what you do.
- Watch it for a few days in one chat before widening the scope. Read what it actually sent, not just that it sent something.
- Turn it off during hours you are available.
Four rules that keep auto-replies working for you
- Say that it is automated. One line. It sets expectations and nobody feels misled.
- Always offer the human route. “I’ll reply properly this evening” is what keeps the enquiry alive.
- Never send unsolicited messages. Replying to people who wrote to you is fine. Messaging people who did not is spam under Telegram’s terms and risks your account.
- Re-read the transcripts weekly. Auto-replies fail quietly. The only way to catch a bad answer is to look.
Telegram auto reply questions
What is a Telegram auto reply?
An automatic response sent to someone who messages you, without you being there. It can be a fixed message — an away notice, for example — or, with an AI client, a reply written in response to what the person actually asked.
Does Telegram have a built-in auto reply?
Telegram’s Business features include greeting and away messages, which send fixed text on a schedule or to new contacts. They are useful, but the text does not change based on the question. An AI auto-reply reads the message first and answers it.
Is automatic replying against Telegram’s rules?
Automation is a normal part of Telegram — the whole Bot API exists for it. What Telegram’s terms prohibit is unsolicited bulk messaging and spam. Replying to people who messaged you first is not that; blasting messages at people who did not is.
Do I need a separate bot account for auto-replies?
Not with Odingram — auto-replies run on your own account, so people get a reply in the chat they already opened with you. A BotFather bot is a separate account with its own username, which suits a public help desk more than personal messages.
Should I tell people a reply was automated?
Yes. It costs you nothing, it prevents the awkward moment when someone realises, and it sets the right expectation about when a human will follow up. A single line is enough.
How do I turn auto-replies off temporarily?
Switch the rule off in the app when you are available, and back on when you are not. Treating it as something you toggle, rather than something permanently on, is what keeps it useful rather than annoying.
